A Heart That Is Fixed on God

I bless the Lord who gives me counsel; in the night also my heart instructs me.
I keep the Lord always before me; because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices; my body also rests secure.
Psalm 16:7-9

These little verses say a lot when I actually think about them. God guides the faithful, and the heart that is fixed on God is a heart that can be trusted. The result? Well, of course, Calvin says it best in his commentary on the 16th Psalm:
Calmly to rejoice is the lot of none but of them who have learned to place their confidence in God alone, and to commit their lives and safety to his protection.
I may think I want many things. But only one thing is worth having in the end, and that is a heart that is satisfied with its Maker.

What I consider to be my blessings, O God, are more often temptations to turn my eyes from you and seek my security in that which is not you. Dare I therefore pray, "Lead me not into temptation, but deliver me from the evil of material possessions?" At least I will pray for the grace that I may pray aright as your Son taught me...
